Albemarle names Ragnar Udd its new chief executive as global lithium demand grows 45%

Udd, now chief commercial officer at the mining company BHP, will take over as chief executive of Albemarle, the leading global lithium producer, effective February 1, 2027. He replaces Kent Masters as global lithium consumption climbed 45% through May 2026, beating the forecast the company set for itself, and as each 1 dollar per kilogram swing in the lithium price now moves annual earnings at Albemarle by about 250 million dollars.

Who is Albemarle new chief executive

The answer to who is Albemarle new chief executive is Ragnar Udd. Albemarle announced on September 3, 2026 that Udd will become its next president and chief executive, effective February 1, 2027, replacing Kent Masters, who has led Albemarle since April 2020 and will become executive chairman, a role leading the Albemarle board while stepping back from daily operations, through the 2027 annual shareholder meeting. Udd currently serves as chief commercial officer at BHP, the mining company, overseeing sales, marketing and how BHP buys and prices raw materials. He brings more than 25 years leading resources businesses, Albemarle states.

I am excited to work with Kent, the leadership team and the Board to build on the Company's strong foundation in both its Energy Storage and Specialties business segments.

Why lithium demand explains the timing

Udd arrives as demand for lithium, the metal used in nearly every electric vehicle and grid battery, is running far ahead of what Albemarle itself expected. Global lithium consumption grew 45% through May 2026, exceeding the 15% to 40% growth range Albemarle itself had forecast for the year, Yahoo Finance and Benzinga report. On the supply side, a Chinese regulator revoked approval for the largest mine owned by the battery maker CATL, cutting the 2026 output forecast for that mine by 50% and tightening supply. Each 1 dollar per kilogram swing in the lithium price now moves adjusted earnings at Albemarle, a profit measure that excludes one time costs, by about 250 million dollars a year.

The business Udd is taking over

The Energy Storage segment, the part of Albemarle that sells lithium for batteries, brought in net sales of 1.28 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2026, up 78% from a year earlier, Albemarle reported in its earnings release. Sales volume in that segment rose 10.2% year over year, a figure calculated here from the tonnage Albemarle reported, more precise than the 11% some coverage rounds it to. The average price the segment realized for its lithium climbed 60.5%, to 19.53 dollars a kilogram, and adjusted earnings for the segment reached 723.5 million dollars, up 229% from a year earlier.

The earnings release also lays out 3 lithium price scenarios for the rest of 2026.

What the regulatory filing shows that the announcement does not

The press release Albemarle issued names Udd as the pick, but the pay behind the move only surfaces in a separate filing made with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission, the government agency that regulates public companies. That filing sets a base salary for Udd of 1,300,000 dollars a year and a sign on bonus of 1,400,000 dollars, to offset bonus pay he is giving up at BHP. It also grants him 11,000,000 dollars in one time stock awards, plus an annual long term incentive award of 7,500,000 dollars starting in 2027. None of those figures appear in the announcement Albemarle made of the hire, the kind of detail that only shows up when the regulatory filing itself gets read.
