Federal money for the Maine weatherization assistance program reached 5,056,574 dollars for 2026, but the single largest piece, the Weatherization Assistance Program itself, actually fell 8.3% from last year. How to apply for the Maine weatherization assistance program

The Maine weatherization assistance program pays to seal and insulate a home so it loses less heat and costs less to heat through the winter. The program runs on 3 levels, the federal Department of Energy, a state agency, and local agencies that actually do the work inside a home, according to the National Association for State Community Services Programs. Maine does not take applications directly. A resident instead contacts one of the 9 Community Action Program agencies across the state, the same network that runs the Home Energy Assistance Program, the home heating fuel aid program, and gets evaluated for both programs through the same application. The federal government just sent that network more money to work with, more than 5 million dollars for 2026.

Maine 2026 award totals 5,056,574 dollars

That total comes from 3 separate federal funding streams. The Weatherization Assistance Program supplies 4,094,134 dollars, the largest share. The Weatherization Readiness Fund adds 397,790 dollars. The State Energy Program contributes 564,650 dollars for broader energy work the state chooses itself. Adding the 3 figures by hand reaches 5,056,574 dollars exactly, matching the total Maine reports for 2026.

The core award actually fell

The total looks larger than last year only because 2 more funding streams got folded into it in 2026. The Weatherization Assistance Program award itself, the largest single piece, fell from 4,465,333 dollars in 2025 to 4,094,134 dollars in 2026, a drop of about 8.3%. The State Energy Program figure held exactly steady at 564,650 dollars in both years. So the program a Maine household actually depends on for weatherization work got less money this year, even while the combined total went up.

Senators pushed to release the delayed money

Weatherization funding has usually stayed clear of federal budget fights, but by May 2026 the federal government was running far behind its own schedule for that year. States had no instructions on how to apply for money due to arrive July 1, even though those instructions usually go out the previous December. Senator Susan Collins and Senator Angus King pushed for the money to move. Collins said what the funding means for Maine once it was released.

These programs enjoy broad bipartisan support and play important roles in lowering energy bills and improving the safety and efficiency of homes in Maine.

She also described the outcome of that push.

Following our bipartisan request, I am pleased that the Administration has released these funds so that state agencies can continue putting them to work in communities throughout our state.

What weatherization saves nationally

Nationally, the program has helped more than 7.2 million families since it began in 1976, and now weatherizes roughly 32,000 homes a year while supporting about 8,500 jobs, according to the Department of Energy. Its own average savings figure is 372 dollars or more a year for a household that gets the work done. No source behind this story gives a savings figure specific to Maine, so that national average is the nearest sourced comparison, not a Maine specific promise.
