The most efficient solar panel technology of 2026 keeps setting laboratory records that no customer can buy yet. In July 2026, the Chinese manufacturer LONGi announced a perovskite silicon tandem solar cell, a design that stacks a manufactured crystal material called perovskite on top of an ordinary silicon layer so the cell captures more of the sunlight spectrum than silicon alone can, independently certified at 35.5% efficiency, a new world record. That easily clears 33.7%, the Shockley Queisser limit, the ceiling an ordinary single layer silicon cell cannot pass. LONGi states a theoretical ceiling of 43% for this two layer design only in its own announcement, not in either news article covering the record, a detail that shows how much room is left above the current one.
How the most efficient solar panel record climbed
The European Solar Test Installation, ESTI, an independent laboratory, certified the new figure, and a second, unrelated outlet confirmed both the number and the certifying body on its own. The record has climbed steadily since LONGi first passed 34%. It reached 33.9% in November 2023, 34.6% in June 2024, then jumped to 35.5% in July 2026.

The gap between the lab and the market
None of this record chasing is for sale yet. The only company actually shipping a commercial perovskite tandem panel is Oxford PV, which builds its panels at a pilot line in Brandenburg an der Havel, Germany. The first panels Oxford PV shipped to a United States customer carry a module efficiency of 24.5%. A separate lab test of an Oxford PV module reached 26.9%, a figure the company describes as a recent record rather than the rating of a product it has actually shipped. Oxford PV chief executive officer David Ward called the shift significant.

Other manufacturers racing past 34%
LONGi is not the only manufacturer past 34%. JinkoSolar certified its own cell at 34.82% in June 2026, verified by the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Separately, LONGi and Soochow University published a peer reviewed paper in September 2026 describing a 34.0% cell. Only its voltage reading, 2.014 volts, was independently certified, not the 34.0% efficiency figure itself, so that qualifier travels with the number. The real advance in the paper is durability. The new design retained 84% of its output after 2,000 hours of testing, while an older design without the same layer had already dropped to 70% after only 1,000 hours, a comparison across different lengths of time that this article makes to show a difference in the speed of decline rather than a same moment reading. LONGi researcher He Bo said the design delivers multiple gains at once.
These results highlight an effective interfacial engineering strategy for simultaneously delivering high efficiency, enhanced voltage, and long term operational stability.
