One firm date and one strong test do not belong to one company
Five sources on solid state batteries, which replace the liquid inside a normal battery with a solid material to pack in more energy and resist fire better, split the makers building one into 2 groups that do not overlap. The maker naming the firmest date is not the maker holding the strongest test. Nissan is the only maker in this sample naming a single fiscal year for its own finished car. Volkswagen battery unit PowerCo and partner QuantumScape hold the strongest independently reported test result and name no year at all.
Nissan names fiscal year 2028
Nissan states on its technology page that it aims to launch an electric vehicle with an all solid state battery developed in house by fiscal year 2028, a stated year from the automaker itself, for a finished car, not a lab sample. The battery would reach roughly twice the energy density of a conventional lithium ion battery and cost less from cheaper materials. No source gives a sales volume.
The strongest test names no year at all
PowerCo, Volkswagen own battery unit, tested a 24 layer solid state cell built by partner QuantumScape at its laboratory in Salzgitter, Germany. PowerCo confirmed the cell completed more than 1,000 charge cycles, the number of times a battery can be charged and drained before it wears out, while keeping 95% of its capacity, beating the 700 cycle industry standard PowerCo cites. PowerCo says that equals more than 500,000 kilometres of driving for a car with a 500 to 600 kilometre range, and names no year for building that car.
These results from the Volkswagen Group's PowerCo testing make clear that QuantumScape's anodeless solid state lithium metal cells are capable of exceptional performance.

PowerCo also says the tested cell kept 95% of its capacity, against a maximum 20% loss allowed by the same industry standard.

CATL named a year in 2024 its own chairman says has not been met
CATL, the largest battery maker in the world by sales, stated in July 2024 that it aimed to reach level 7 to 8 of 9 on its own readiness scale by 2027, a level at which small batches could be produced. In June 2026, chairman Robin Zeng Yuqun placed the technology at level 4 of 9, the same level CATL described itself at more than 2 years earlier, and said mass production will not begin before 2030.
Even if the products are delivered, it remains to be seen whether they will be well received and become a commercial success on the market.

CATL has begun pilot production of cells at 500 watt hours per kilogram, about double the best liquid electrolyte packs sold today.
Honda names a window, and a trade count adds more companies
Honda states in a November 2024 release that it aims to apply its all solid state batteries to electrified models on sale in the second half of the 2020s, a 5 year window rather than a single year. Honda began building a demonstration production line in Sakura City, Tochigi Prefecture, at a stated investment of approximately 43 billion yen. A single trade industry count, published in July 2024, names Toyota, Samsung SDI, Hyundai and SK On for years between 2025 and 2029, none confirmed against any of those companies own websites, since Toyota own newsroom returned an error on every attempt. BYD is the only maker naming unit counts, small batches of about 1,000 in 2027, 40,000 in 2030 and 120,000 in 2033.
BYD is the only maker in this file naming a unit count against a year. This rests on 1 trade industry count published in July 2024 and could not be checked against a BYD statement in this reporting.
