What the heat pump water heater rebate pays in Maine right now
Anyone shopping for a heat pump water heater rebate in Maine can claim 1,150 dollars right now, taken as an instant discount at checkout or, if no instant discount was available at purchase, as a mail in rebate of the same amount, according to Efficiency Maine, the ratepayer funded state trust that runs the program. A heat pump water heater moves heat from the surrounding air into the tank instead of burning fuel or using plain electric resistance heat, and Efficiency Maine states it uses less than half the electricity of a standard electric resistance water heater to do the same job. The rebate carries no income limit. To qualify, the unit must be new, installed in Maine, and ENERGY STAR certified of any tank size, and a homeowner does not need to hire an Efficiency Maine Registered Vendor to install it. A household can claim 1 rebate per address each calendar year, filed within 6 months of purchase with proof of receipt.

What a heat pump water heater actually costs after the rebate
Efficiency Maine names the price after the rebate at 4 retailers. A unit from Granite Group runs 349 dollars, from Selco 399 dollars, from Lowes 400 dollars, down from a 1,550 dollar list price, and from Home Depot 549 dollars. Applied to that Lowes unit, the rebate cuts the price by more than 1,000 dollars. Efficiency Maine also states a household that switches can save up to 650 dollars a year on its electric bill.

Why 43 million dollars is arriving for Maine water heaters now
Governor Janet Mills announced the new 43 million dollars on March 27, 2026. The money flows through the New England Heat Pump Accelerator, a 5 state program led by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, with Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island also taking part. That accelerator carries 450 million dollars in total federal Climate Pollution Reduction Grant funding across the 5 states, and the 43 million dollars is the share going to Maine, earmarked specifically for heat pump water heaters. The state is aiming to get 30,000 more heat pump water heaters installed with this funding, on top of the more than 70,000 the state says have already gone in since 2018.

A separate program from the space heating rebate
This 43 million dollars funds heat pump water heaters only, a program separate from the tiered rebate covering space heating heat pumps and separate from the general 2027 statewide heat pump target, both covered elsewhere. Michael Stoddard, Executive Director at Efficiency Maine, advises homeowners and landlords with an aging water heater or boiler nearing the end of its life to check the Efficiency Maine website for current rebates and a list of participating contractors before the heating season ends.
