Why dairies are turning to the sun at all
The National Dairy Development Board of India is working with the power company Tata Power to add solar power across parts of the milk supply chain, including the cooling that keeps milk from spoiling on its way to the dairy. Meenesh Shah, chairman and managing director of the National Dairy Development Board, said the effort reaches across the whole dairy value chain, not just cooling.
By integrating renewable energy solutions, we aim to boost the operational efficiency across dairy value chain and promote the use of green fuels.

An ice battery needs no lithium or lead
A solar powered ice battery cools milk overnight without any lithium or lead acid cell inside it. During the day, solar panels freeze water, or a wax like phase change material, into ice. Overnight, that ice slowly melts and keeps the milk cold. The Sun Danzer farm milk chiller works this way, needing only 5 hours of sunlight a day to freeze water built into its own walls and hold a 40 liter load of milk cold overnight. It is field tested in Kenya and Rwanda, with 82 units running at 1,850 dollars each. A similar solar system built at the University of Hohenheim can bank up to 50 kilograms of ice across 5 low sunlight days, enough to chill 60 liters of milk a day, at 1,560 to 2,245 dollars depending on whether it is built locally in Kenya or shipped in finished.
Sun Danzer and the Hohenheim system charge their ice from solar panels. Promethean charges its ice mostly from grid electricity, not solar, per source 1.

But the biggest fleet still runs on the grid
The largest deployment built on this same ice as a battery idea is Promethean Power Systems, with about 3,000 rapid milk chillers running across rural India through dairy processors including Amul and Chitale. Each holds 500 liters, charges its ice bank in 5 hours, and chills milk below 4 degrees Celsius using a phase change material the company calls a thermal battery. But an independent peer reviewed review states that most of that fleet builds its ice from grid electricity, not from midday sun, and that Promethean is still developing a version that runs fully off grid on solar power. The Promethean website confirms this framing, describing the product as replacing a diesel generator that used to back up the grid, rather than as a device that runs on solar.
Why the minutes after milking matter
Milk has to reach a chiller within 1 to 1.5 hours of leaving the cow. After that window closes, the natural preservatives already dissolved in raw milk stop protecting it, and spoiling speeds up. The Food and Agricultural Organization estimates that post harvest milk losses reach 23 million dollars a year in Uganda, 22.4 million dollars in Kenya and 14.7 million dollars in Tanzania, with smallholder farmers absorbing 5.8% of that loss at the farm itself and another 11% during transport to the dairy.
Figures are Food and Agricultural Organization estimates as reported within source 1.

Scale, not the technology, sets the price
Dividing the cost of each system by how much milk it holds shows what scale, not the underlying technology, is doing to the price. The Sun Danzer chiller costs about 46 dollars for every liter it can hold, and the Hohenheim system costs 26 to 37 dollars a liter depending on where it is built. Promethean, running at 500 liters a unit across 3,000 units, works out to about 14 dollars a liter, even though its ice comes mostly from the grid rather than the sun. These per liter figures are not published anywhere. They come from dividing the cost each system states by the capacity that system states, both pulled from the same review.
This division is made for this article from the cost and capacity figures each system reports in source 1. It is not a published statistic. Sun Danzer and both Hohenheim figures are solar charged. Promethean is charged mostly from the grid.
